Important End of Semester Immigration Reminders

We hope everyone has had a successful spring semester! Below are some important immigration reminders for F-1 students. Note that each situation is unique and the information below is general.  If you have any questions or concerns about your particular situation, CIE advisors are available to meet with you during Walk-In hours Monday through Friday from 1-4 pm.

If you are graduating…

Congratulations!

THINGS TO KNOW

PROGRAM COMPLETION DATE AND GRACE PERIOD

If you are a graduating F-1 or J-1 student, your official program completion date for the Spring semester is May 11, 2019. This is the completion date even if you are meeting a second Spring thesis/dissertation deadline. You must end all on-campus employment by May 11, 2019 or I-20/DS-2019 program end date, which ever date is sooner.

F-1 Students: Your 60-day grace period begins on May 12. If you have applied for Optional Practical Training (OPT), your program completion date may even be sooner (check your OPT I-20).

J-1 Students: Your 30-day grace period begins the day after your program completion date

TRAVEL

F-1 Students: The 60-day grace period is intended for you to prepare to leave the U.S.  Unless you transfer to a different university or program, to a different immigration status or file for OPT, you must leave the U.S. by the end of your grace period.

J-1 Students: The 30-day grace period is intended for you to prepare to leave the U.S.  Unless you transfer to a different university or program, to a different immigration status or file for AT, you must leave the U.S. by the end of your grace period. You can travel inside the U.S. during your grace period but you may not leave the country and return in J-1 status.  Academic Training and transfer situations are exceptions and we discuss those individually during the Academic Training or transfer process.

TRAVEL

If you are a continuing student and plan to travel abroad this summer, please be sure to check your immigration documents and submit a travel authorization request via the iVols portal before you depart (at least 2 weeks in advance).  If you plan to travel inside the U.S., please be sure to take your passport and current I-20/DS-2019 with you.

ELECTRONIC I-94

If you are traveling abroad, CIE strongly recommends that you print out a copy of your electronic I-94 upon your return. Review your I-94 to verify that the information is correct. You can check your I-94 here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#
