Scott Cantrell, Director
Scott Cantrell is the Director responsible for both International House and International Student and Scholar Services at the Center for Global Engagement. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from Ball State University, and a Master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration from Central Missouri University. Scott is no stranger to life as an international. He studied abroad in Mexico as an undergraduate. He has also lived and worked in Germany for two years, and the United Kingdom for ten.
Dr. Elizabeth Washam Smith, Assistant Director
International Support Services
Elizabeth is the Assistant Director of International Student & Scholar Services, where she oversees employment-based immigration services for international faculty, researchers, and staff, with primary responsibility for permanent residency and H-1B processing. She holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and M.S. in College Student Personnel, both from the University of Tennessee, and a B.A. in French and Communication from Wake Forest University. Her undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral research explored various topics focused on international student success, including intercultural communication, college choice, and persistence. As an undergraduate, she spent a semester studying abroad in France, and then she returned to live and work on the island of Corsica for three years upon graduation. Elizabeth currently volunteers at the national level on NAFSA’s International Student and Scholar Regulatory Practice Committee. She enjoys learning about the interests of international students and scholars and helping them to be successful at UT and in the U.S.
David Lawson, Coordinator
International Scholar Advisor
David is a Coordinator in the International Student and Scholar Services with primary responsibility for the J scholar program and advising F and J students. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in political science from East Tennessee State University and Master’s in counseling from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. David is originally from Maryville, Tennessee. After his undergraduate degree he lived in Nairobi, Kenya for two years. He believes that personal intercultural contact presents a great opportunity for a richer self-understanding and expanding one’s horizon.
Brian Todd, Coordinator
International Student Advisor
Brian is a Coordinator in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Carson-Newman University and a Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Brian has previously worked in international admissions and advising in the community college and liberal arts college settings. He has significant experience traveling and recruiting abroad in Brazil, China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Brian enjoys welcoming people from around the world to Knoxville as well as hiking in the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park and other places in the East Tennessee region.
Erik Simons, Coordinator
International Student Advisor
Erik is a Coordinator in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from DePauw University and a master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs from Indiana University. Erik has lived and worked in Spain and has traveled extensively in Europe and South America. He enjoys serving as a resource for international students and believes international education can be a powerful tool for teaching people about themselves and others.
Yevgeniya Teyfukova, Coordinator
International Student Advisor
Yevgeniya is a Coordinator in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Global Studies and in Slavic Languages and Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Yevgeniya also holds a master’s in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. Originally from the former Soviet Union, she has studied abroad in Russia and has travelled extensively throughout Russia, Eastern Europe, and Israel. Yevgeniya enjoys learning languages, exploring new countries and cultures, and supporting international students throughout their time in the US.
Candice Gilreath, Coordinator
Candice is a Coordinator in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). As a Coordinator, Candice supports International Scholars throughout their time at the University of Tennessee. A native of Murfreesboro, TN and firm believer in civic engagement, she received her Bachelor’s degree in Political Science here at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Public Policy and Administration. During her time as an undergrad, she was an active participant in the International Friendship program. Candice enjoys traveling and spending time outdoors.
Jenni Wright, Administrative Specialist II
Jenni is an Administrative Specialist in the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). Born and raised in Manila, Philippines, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in European Languages (major in French and minor in Comparative Literature) from the University of the Philippines. She worked in the education and administration fields and has lived in the United Arab Emirates, France, Germany and Italy. She is passionate about traveling, different cultures and languages, photography, music, nature and animal rescue.
Atheeqa Aijaz, Graduate Assistant
Atheeqa is a Graduate Assistant in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Geological Science from the State University of New York in Geneseo, NY. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Social Work with a concentration in Evidence-Based Interpersonal Practice. Atheeqa is originally from Chennai, India and frequently travels back to visit friends and family. She enjoys learning new languages, exploring different cultures, and trying ethnic cuisine. Atheeqa is thrilled to support international students and scholars throughout their stay in the United States.
