Spring Semester Immigration Reminders

Address Changes

If your address changes (even if it’s just the apartment number) please be sure to update your address with both CIE and on MyUTK. Submit your change of address to CIE through the iVols portal so that your SEVIS record is updated. The online form can be accessed through iVols

You must submit the change to CIE within 10 days of moving.

Enrollment Requirements

All students must be enrolled full-time. This means:

  • Undergraduates must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours
  • Graduate students without 50% assistantships (less than 20 hours per week) must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credit hours
  • Graduate students with 50% assistantships (20 hours per week) must be enrolled for a minimum of 6 credit hours

Dropping and Adding Courses

Friday, January 18th is the last day to add classes or make any schedule changes without assistance from a CIE adviser. If you wish to drop a course after January 18th, you will need CIE approval. Please ensure that you are enrolled full-time that you have paid all the required tuition and fees by the end of the day on Friday, January 18th.

Insurance waivers

If you wish to obtain an insurance waiver, you must complete a waiver form each semester. To request a waiver, please submit your request to the Student Health Center by Friday, January 18th. For more information, please visit:http://studenthealth.utk.edu/health-insurance-records-requests/international-students/

Electronic I-94

Each time you enter the U.S., you are issued an I-94 arrival record. If you traveled abroad during winter break, CIE strongly recommends that you access your I-94 and ensure that your record is accurate. The I-94 should show that you entered the U.S. in F-1 or J-1 status.

Check your I-94 online here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/home

OPT for May 2019 Graduates

*F-1 Students only*

If you will complete your academic program this semester and plan to apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT), CIE recommends applying by the end of January.

If you have questions about applying, read the information on our website and register for the OPT Seminar at http://international.utk.edu/practical-training/opt/, or visit CIE for walk-in advising.

Walk-in Advising

Walk-in Advising hours for students are held from 1pm – 4pm, Monday through Friday. Please check in with the front desk at CIE before seeing an advisor. More immigration information reminders for F-1 and J-1 students can be found at http://international.utk.edu/isss/immigration-information/
