About the CIE
The Center for International Education (CIE), a department within the Division of Academic Affairs, serves as a catalyst at every level for the internationalization of the entire UTK community. The CIE is made up of four units. With the exception of the International House, all are situated in the Melrose Hall complex at 1620 Melrose Avenue near UTK’s Hodges Library. CIE’s main offices are open from 8:00 AM until 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
History
The earliest international student identified in the records of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is one Mr. Stamas S. Trikaliotis of Greece, who was awarded an M.A. degree in 1844. It was not until the middle of the twentieth century, however, that international students began coming in significant numbers to the banks of the Tennessee River for their higher education. International House
The International House (I-House) is a free-standing, non-residential programming facility that was opened in 1996 to provide all UTK students with a place in which they could meet and learn about people of every culture represented at UTK. The I-House is situated at 1623 Melrose Avenue (adjacent to CIE’s main offices) and is open every day of the year. Its telephone number is 865-974-4453.
Programs Abroad Office
The Programs Abroad Office (PAO) provides students with information about their options for overseas study, research, work, volunteer projects and travel. The PAO administers most of UTK’s international one-for-one student exchange programs, including ISEP, and is also the campus contact for student Fulbright awards, Rhodes Scholarships, Marshall Scholarships and the National Security Education Program. The PAO assists faculty as well: helping them to develop faculty led programs, providing administrative support for faculty led international programs, providing matching funds (up to $1,500) for visits to future faculty led program sites, and assisting in the identification of international teaching and research opportunities.
Student and Scholar Services
The Office of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) has several responsibilities: Once students have been formally admitted by a UTK admissions office, ISSS becomes responsible for the orientation and advising of international students. All new international students must report to this office. CIE plays no role in the admission process. ISSS also works closely with faculty, departments and colleges to serve the numerous visiting scholars who come from abroad in order to lecture, teach, advise or conduct research on the UTK campus.
